Joseph Drouhin Saint-Veran Burgundy and Trader Joe's Mini Mint Ice Cream Mouthfuls

White Burgundy may sound too high-falutin for mini mint ice cream mouthfuls, but we never let that stop us. This was one of the first wines we had from Joseph Drouhin and we fell with this winemaker because of it.

Saint-Veran is long gone from PLCB shelves, but you should still be able to find other efforts from Drouhin, like  Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune 2007, which is also excellent and a great food wine.

Blind Tasting White Burgundy: Moore Brothers Strikes Back?

Our last out-of-state blind tasting pitted a white Burgundy purchased at PLCB stores, one purchased from Moore Brothers in New Jersey, and an unoaked Chardonnay from Macari winery in Long Island.

Macari:

Chardonnay 2007

All of these wines were very good examples of unoaked Chardonnay, but the Saint-Véran from Moore Brothers seem to win over the most votes due to its fuller body.  The Joseph Drouhin from PLCB was a close second, a few people remained undecided. The Macari from Long Island was the lightest of the three in color, body, and taste. Although the Moore Brothers wine won on pure taste, for the difference in price, maybe the PLCB wine is the better value?

Ok enough PLCB talk, let's get back to wine.

We stopped by Store 9113 (19th and Chestnut) this morning and found a number of summer wines on sale, from dry rosé's to Sauvignon Blancs to this lovely white Burgundy from Joseph Drouhin.

We are big fans of Chardonnay, in both its over-the-top oaky/buttery California incarnation and the classic unoaked styles from Burgundy. This wine is unoaked from St.Veran/Maconnais/Cote de Beaune. That means it's from France. If you are only familiar with California Chardonnay, you have to try this.

Pale yellow color. On the nose vanilla and some kind of flinty/mineral/steel thing going on. On the front palate is nice smooth vanilla, and then on the back palate it just bursts into mouth-watering citrusy flavors that go on and on in a nice long finish. Unusual for a wine at this price point.  This is a great summer wine and great value at $11.99. Pair with summer food, like this pasta with tomato, basil and tuna.

There's a bunch of bottles at 19th and Chestnut. Go buy some. Just leave a few for us.
