Brunori Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico San Nicolo

Another from Moore Brothers from their recent 10% off sale. This was medium bodied and lemony. 

The 6 hectares of the San Nicolò vineyard are located in the heart of the Verdicchio D.O.C., 200 meters above sea level. The varietal has been vinified in this area since the 15th century. Having produced excellent Verdicchio for three generations, the Brunori family has achieved a perfect balance of tradition in the vineyard (no chemicals, hand-harvesting, respect of the sandy soils) and innovation in the cellar (soft-pressing and microfiltering). The result is a wine of structure and fleshiness, with beautiful aromatics and a lovely, nutty finish. This is also a wine for aging - 5 to 8 years - taking on more complex layers of aromas and textures.

Verdicchio and Pan-Seared Scallops

Verdicchio is a great value Italian white that goes well with seafood like our pan-seared scallops and is a good alternative to Pinot Grigio. This one had a nice creamy mouthfeel and a long finish. Both Greg Moore and Gary Vaynerchuk loved this wine--Vaynerchuk said it "brought the thunder" for $12.  This was a special offering at Moore Brothers for $11, still available but now $13.

This one is getting some good reviews on PAWineTalk.  Prices on WineSearcher range from $26 to $42 across the country so this looks to be a good deal at the PA price of $14.99  Available at JFK, 12th and Chestnut, Society Hill, 232 W Girard, and Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, and Villanova.

Moore Brothers in NJ  had two specials on their email list recently that looked good.  Order online or call first, these tend to sell out quickly.

Frutti di Mare and Red or White?

We are not in Philly this week, so when we looked out our window and saw this: 

we knew we had to run to the local fish shop so we could make this:

which is Frutti di Mare or pasta and seafood.  This can be a tricky pairing because it has seafood, which would indicate white wine, but it's in tomato sauce, which may tempt you into red.  You could go either way, but we recommend a high acid Italian white, such as the Fattoria Laila Verdicchio that we received as a gift from friends.  We used it in the sauce and it went well with the food.

We went to a small local wine shop and told them what we were cooking. They recommended Antica Osteria, a red blend from Italy.  It was ok, but nothing special, and not as popular at the table as Chateau Simian Cotes du Rhone, a Garagiste selection.
