Vina Eguia Tempranillo Reserva 2007

Smooth, velvety, earthy, medium body, a little pepper. Very enjoyable tempranillo Rioja Reserva for $9.99.

The label is amusing. There is a hand on an open book surrounded by the words In vino veritas (In wine there is truth). Below that it says in Spanish  La verdad y nada mas que la verdad (The truth and nothing but the truth). Further below there is more rambling in Spanish about truth and wine.

As far as wine labels go, we'll take quotes about truth and wine in foreign languages over bears, frogs and fishes any day. It also helps that the wine is good, and that's the truth.

Full-bodied, on the plummy side, spicy finish. Something artificial about it, a hint of suspicion of mega-purple?  Still, very good for the price.   85

Suckers for Tempranillo: 2007 Miguel Torres Ribera del Duero Céleste Roble

Just call us suckers for Tempranillo cause we can't get enough of this. Aromas of chocolate/espresso/leather give way to a medium bodied dark cherry taste initially, then moving into a pleasant smokiness and then a really enjoyable long finish. Must...get...more. 

Torres Ribera del Duero Celeste is consistently rated 89-90 in Wine Spectator and routinely sells for between $15 and $24 outside of PA. There are 24 bottles left of the 2007 at 12th and Chestnut but you are taking your chances because it's been very warm in that store recently. Better to try Bryn Mawr which has 34 bottles.

Damalisco Toro Crianza

Deep purple color, dark fruit like blackberry, and some spices, maybe cinnamon.  Nice finish, went well with crock pot spare ribs.  Rated 89 on CellarTracker and 90 in Wine Advocate.

Pretty much none left in Philly, you'll have to try Bryn Mawr or King of Prussia for this one.

Wine Review Truchard Tempranillo 2005

 We picked this up at the clearance sale for $6.99 reduced from $15.99.  Light bodied, it seemed more like Gamay or Pinot Noir instead of Tempranillo.  The finish is long but not altogether pleasant.   We'd pass on this one next time.

Campo Viejo Tempranillo SALE $6.99

We never get tired of this Tempranillo from Rioja for $6.99.  Dark cherries on the nose and palate, great with all kinds of food.  There are a number of bottles on available in the Center City stores and at Franklin Mills. Buy a bottle of this and a bottle of the Lacrimus Rioja Crianza 2006 which is a Chairman's Selection for $12.99 and rated 90 points by Wine Advocate.  Is the Lacrimus really worth almost 2x the price?  We intend to find out--but first we have to go buy the Lacrimus.

2006 Campo Viejo Rioja

This wine seems to go on sale at PLCB stores every few weeks, although there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it goes on sale so we always stalk it and check the price. The crianza goes on sale for about $6.99 and the reserva for $8.99. You will not find prices better than this anywhere, including out of state.  The crianza and reserva are both good, the reserva maybe has a little more body.  The crianza is great with burgers and is an excellent choice for barbecues. If you don't yet know about tempranillo, it's time to learn.
