Castle Rock is a virtual winery--they don't own land or wine-making equipment. They buy grapes and contract with other wineries to have the wine made. Seems suspect to us, but they have a reputation for making decent quality but inexpensive wine, particularly Pinot Noir.
According to their web site, this Pinot Gris is made from 100% Pinot Gris grapes from Monterey County California. To us it tasted like a mashup of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio with the oaky vanilla up front and the lemon zing on the end. Apparently this is what California/Oregon Pinot Gris is supposed to taste like. It was actually pretty good and complemented our food very well.
This is a pleasant end of summer quaffer and a great buy at $6.99.
