A great deal from one of the PLCB's clearance sales--Barolos are hard to come by for under $50 never mind under $20. Made from the Nebbiolo grape, Barolo is notorious for being strong and tannic and something of an acquired taste.
Apparently you are supposed to bottle age these babies for 10 or more years, but who has the patience? We may have served this wine before its time, but we got tired of waiting. This started out promising with a luscious nose of dark fruit, violets, and spice, but on the palate it was sort of a letdown. Still quite tannic and dry, would be good with something like osso buco and a rich sauce. Earthy but not earth-shattering.
