François Rabelais was from Chinon, and the wine drinking antics in Gargantua and Pantagruel are said to be inspired by the wine from this region, which is good enough reason for us to heed Gargantua's birth cry and Drink! Drink! Drink!
This wine is pale red in color, has some interesting aromatics (the famous pencil lead?) and has both a fruity and bitter taste. This is just different enough from most of the reds we drink to make it interesting and worthwhile. Too bad it's mostly gone from the Philadelphia area; only a few bottles remain at Franklin Mills. Hope we see this one again.
